ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – MARULA / IMPLATS

The Marula Mine is a platinum mine located in the Limpopo province of South Africa. Marula is 73% owned by Implats and is one of the first operations to have been developed on the relatively under-exploited eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex in South Africa.

Implats is one of the top producers of platinum and related platinum group metals (PGMs) (cobalt, copper and nickel), with operations based in the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe and the Bushveld Complex in SA – two of the greatest global PGM-bearing ore bodies.

The company is listed on the JSE Limited, has approximately 53 000 employees and a revenue of around R26.121 billion.

Implats vision is to be the best and biggest platinum-producing organisation across the globe, and they are keeping true to their goal by producing 22% of the primary platinum supply in the world.
 

ABOUT THE MARULA BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

Marula is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2025 academic year.

Bursaries will be awarded to students residing in local communities near the Marula Mine (Limpopo), for studies within the following fields:

  • Chemical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Geology
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Metallurgy Engineering
  • Mining Engineering

The bursary will provide cover for the following expenses: registration fees, tuition fees, accommodation in residence, meals, cash allowance and mentorship support, as well as a personal computer for second year students.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and required to attend an interview. If you have not received feedback within 30 days of the application deadline, please regard your application as unsuccessful.

After the interview stage, candidates will undergo psychometric assessments. The psychometric assessment invitation will be sent after Marula receives your university admission letter.
 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MARULA BURSARY

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must reside in a local community, in Limpopo province
  • You must have completed Matric with a university exemption pass
  • You must be studying or intend on studying towards a qualification within one of the fields of study listed above
  • You must be studying or intend on studying at one of the following universities in South Africa: University of Cape Town (UCT), University of Johannesburg (UJ), University of Pretoria (UP), University of North West in Potchefstroom (NWU), University of Witwatersrand (Wits), University of Limpopo (UL)
  • You must have achieved a minimum “C” symbol for English in Matric
  • You must have achieved a minimum “C” symbol for Physical Science Matric
  • You must have achieved a minimum “C” symbol for Mathematics in Matric
  • You must have achieved a minimum overall result of 60% in all subjects, if currently studying at university
  • You must have a valid medical certificate or be medically fit in order to obtain the certificate
  • You must be able to work under pressure
  • You must have leadership potential and be able to work within a team
  • You must have good problem solving skills
  • You must be able to make decisions and think logically
  • You must be self-motivated and have strong communication skills
  • Preference will be given to candidates from designated groups, in line with the Employment Equity Act

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Matric certificate (certified copy)
  • Full tertiary academic record, if currently studying (certified copy)
  • Proof of university acceptance, if available
  • Proof of residence
