Public vs Private Higher Education Institutions – Which should you choose?

After graduating high school, many students experience excitement as they start a new chapter by choosing a university. Choosing where to complete your tertiary education is a big deal, but the choice should not be daunting. In South Africa, students are fortunate enough to have the option of studying at a Public or Private institution, but which should they choose? If you are faced with this dilemma, this article will help you make the best choice that is tailor-made for YOU.

What are the differences between Public and Private Institutions?

The key difference between Public and Private institutions (be it primary/high school or universities) is how they are funded. Whilst Public institutions are funded by the government, Private institutions are funded by a private group or individual.

In South Africa, we hear more about prosperous Public schools, rather than successful Private schools, why is this? Whilst both offer great educational opportunities, Public schools are a lot bigger, and more affordable than Private institutions. However, this does not mean that you should not consider applying for education at a Private institution; both offer you different opportunities and learning styles, that could equally benefit your future career.

Although there are 26 public tertiary institutions across the country, there are far more widely spread out private tertiary institutions. This added benefit of Private learning will allow you to have more freedom in choosing where you could study and how you learn.

Main differences:

Public Institution:

  • Government funding
  • Lower tuition fees
  • A wide range of scholarships offered
  • Full government accreditation
  • Many students based on a less strict criteria
  • More qualifications available
  • Large classes
  • Consists mostly of theory learning and lectures

Private institutions:

  • Private funding
  • Higher tuition fees
  • Limited amount of scholarships offered
  • Accredited nationally
  • Limited amount of students based on strict criteria
  • Qualifications specific to a field of study
  • Small classes
  • Consists mostly of practical learning and interactive classes
  • Allows for distance learning

Factors to consider when choosing between Public and Private institutions

There is no right or wrong decision you make when deciding between the two types of institutions. However, before deciding on where to study, there are a few things you should consider which may aid in your long term decision:

  • Accreditation
  • Administration
  • Funding Sources
  • Qualifications Available
  • Scholarships Offered
  • Tuition Fees and Costs

As a student, you should also consider which institution will meet your study needs, has the right campus size for you, and will specialise in your fields of study. You ultimately want the BEST education, correct? Well, when choosing the correct institution, you must ask yourself one main question, “In which direction do I want to pursue my studies?”

It is best to choose an institution that offers courses specialising in your field of study and will ultimately help you meet your scholarly and vocational goals.

Private Institutions

Owing to the nature of ownership, Private institutions are not constricted by government finances and can run things a little differently than public institutions. Firstly, Private institutions often do not face a shortage of funds as they are in control of their finances and administrative matters. Private institutions also manage their students and conduct education on a more personal level, with smaller and more flexible classes and learning.

Owing to its size, Private institutions often have a sense of camaraderie and family between students and staff alike. As a student of a Private Institution, access to support and staff is greater than that of Public institutions.

Public Institutions

All Public Institutions are funded by the South African Government. Although state funding for an institution is advantageous, Public Institutions can run into a dilemma when funding runs out or cuts are made. However, Government institutions are still a great option for students who may not have the financial means to pursue their studies or studies at a Private Institution.

Public institutions often offer students state-sponsored bursaries, allowing them to pursue their studies without worrying about financial funding. Public institutions also offer students a variety of fields of study to pursue, guaranteeing creditable and affordable qualifications upon completion.

In conclusion

Students should not be distraught about which type of institution to study at once they graduate high school. Your choice of university should be exciting and ultimately be something that will benefit you and meet your financial and educational needs.

Before applying to a tertiary institution, do as much research on prospective institutions: read their About sections on their websites, sign up for newsletters, go to Open Days, and reach out to students and alumni. Your university should meet your goals, needs, and offer courses and an environment that is right for you.

Good luck in your journey; the right institution for you is just around the corner.
