ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – SANBS
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is a non-profit organisation that collects blood from volunteer unpaid donors and processes that blood into components for transfusion.
SANBS aims to collect 3000 units of blood per day to ensure a safe and sufficient blood supply in the health care system.
ABOUT THE SANBS BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2025 academic year.
10 bursaries will be awarded, for studies towards a Bachelor of Health Sciences, with Immunohematology (Blood transfusion) as one of the elective subjects.
Through this bursary programme, SANBS aims to provide funding to students within the scarce and critical skills field of blood transfusion, while contributing to the national goal of increasing access to higher education.

MORE ABOUT THE SANBS BURSARY PROGRAMME – EXPENSES COVERED & SELECTION
The bursary will cover the following expenses:
- Tuition fees, up to R40 000 per annum
- Study materials, up to R10 000 per annum
- Partial cover of accommodation, up to R1 500 per month, for 10 months
- Stipend of R3 500 per month, for 10 months
- Work Integrated Learning, which includes a hands-on experience at SANBS laboratories

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SANBS BURSARY
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must be under 30 years old
- You must be studying towards a Bachelor of Health Sciences, with Immunohematology as one of your elective subjects
- You must be in your 2nd or 3rd year of study
- You must be passionate about your studies
- You must have achieved a minimum overall average of 65% in your previous year of study
- You must NOT be receiving any other financial support through any other bursary
- Preference may be given to students in financial need, who cannot afford to attend university without a bursary, with a total household income of NOT more than R600 000 per annum
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SANBS BURSARY

Enter “www.zabursaries.co.za” in the field asking how you heard about the SANBS bursary.
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
- ID document (certified copy)
- Matric final results/ certificate (certified copy)
- Most recent academic report
- Proof of acceptance at a registered and accredited tertiary institution
- Motivational letter to support your application (maximum 250 words) (read our tips on how to write a motivational letter for your bursary application)
- Parents or guardians proof of household income (certified copy of 3 months latest payslips if employed – not older than 3 months/ affidavit if unemployed/ proof of sassa grant or pension if applicable)
