ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – NACI & NRF
The National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa, is an independent statutory body established through the National Research Foundation Act (Act No 23 of 1998) and is the intermediary agency between the policies and strategies of the Government of South Africa and South Africa’s research institutions.
The National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI) is an institutional body of the Department of Science and Innovation that aims to advise the minister on the role and contribution of science, mathematics, innovation and technology, in an effort to achieve government’s innovation agenda.

The National Advisory Council on Innovation, through the National Research Foundation (NRF), is inviting students to apply for their scholarship programme, for the 2024 academic year.
2 scholarships will be awarded, for PhD studies in Science, Technology and Innovation Policy.

The scholarship will provide cover for the following expenses: tuition fees, accommodation allowance (university owned or privately rented accommodation), and transport and food allowances.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NACI NRF SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must be a South African citizen or a permanent resident in South Africa
- You must be 32 years old or younger in the year of application
- You must have completed a relevant master’s qualification from a university in South Africa or abroad (if completed outside of SA, the master’s must be recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority)
- You must have achieved a minimum result of 65% at master’s level
- You must be studying or intend on studying full-time, towards a PhD qualification in Science, Technology and Innovation Policy
- You must be registered or intend to register at any public university in South Africa
- You must be able to work independently and as part of a team
- You must not be full-time employed while studying
- You must read the NACI NRF Scholarship Application Guide 2025 (.pdf) before applying
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE NACI NRF SCHOLARSHIP
Students who meet the above criteria, can apply via email to Prof. Anastassios Pouris: apouris@icon.co.za
(Insert the words “NACI NRF Scholarship 2025” in the email subject line).
Your email must include your Curriculum Vitae, with a proposed PhD topic or area of interest, maximum 5 pages. (Note: there is no application form to be completed for this scholarship application).
Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete an application for funding on the NRF Connect system. They will receive an NRF application reference number and their application will be sent to their chosen university for screening and review. If the university recommends an application for funding, the NRF will continue with the process.
