ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – CANON COLLINS & TOM QUEBA MEMORIAL FUND

The Canon Collins Trust has been running scholarship programmes since 1981, for students from southern African countries. The Trust has supported over 4 000 scholars, from 14 countries and today the Trust offers undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships for study in South Africa, the UK, Ireland and Malawi.

Tom Queba was a leader in the George taxi industry, who passed away in 2014. Queba was passionate and committed to improving public transport, and to bettering the future of the minibus taxi industry in George. The Tom Queba Memorial Fund and the Tom Queba Engineering Scholarship for Social Change was formed in his memory.
 

ABOUT THE CANON COLLINS TOM QUEBA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

Canon Collins Trust, partnered with the Tom Queba Memorial Fund and Pegasys, is inviting students to apply for the Scholarship for Social Change for the 2025 academic year.

Scholarships will be awarded for Honours and Masters studies, in the following areas related to social change:

  • Education
  • Humanities and the Arts
  • Justice
  • Sciences and Applied Sciences

MORE ABOUT THE CANON COLLINS TOM QUEBA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE & SELECTION

Scholarships will be awarded to the value of R85 000, and students will receive funding for a maximum period of 2 years.

Scholarship recipients will also be able to take part in organised events, in order to enhance academic and leadership skills.

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application via email. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview between October and November 2024, and thereafter successful applicants will be informed in December 2024.

The Trust will select scholars based on the following main criteria: academic merit, financial need, potential to contribute to societies in southern Africa, academic record and references, future impact, work experience, leadership competencies, and alignment with the Trust’s priorities.
 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CANON COLLINS TOM QUEBA SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • You must be a black African or coloured South African national
  • You must reside in South Africa
  • You must have completed a first degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) OR you must be graduating in 2024
  • You must be studying or intend on studying towards a Honours or Masters qualification, in one of the fields listed above
  • You must be studying or intend on studying full-time or part-time (applications will also be considered for distance learning)
  • You must be studying or have applied to study at a university in South Africa
  • You must be willing to partake in an annual conference and various small events throughout the year
  • Your proposed study must contribute to social and/or environmental development, and to the betterment of lives and livelihoods of the poorest people in South Africa

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):

  • Proof of refugee status, if applicable
  • Degree certificates, if available
  • Academic transcripts (certified copy)
  • 2 latest payslips, if employed
  • PhD proposal, if applicable

Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit 2 reference letters and a supporting statement from their supervisor, if applying for PhD study. Candidates should have these ready as they will be required quickly once requested. Ideally, 1 reference should be from your current or most recent academic supervisor, and 1 reference from an employer. Candidates who have not been employed, can submit a reference from voluntary work, or 2 academic references. References should relates to your suitability for this scholarship.
