ABOUT THE MIKE BROWN SCHOLARSHIP – FIELDS COVERED
The Nedbank Eyethu Ownership Plan is inviting students to apply for the Mike Brown Scholarship, for the 2025 academic year.
Scholarships will be awarded for Postgraduate (Honours or Masters) studies, within the following critical skills shortage fields:
- Advanced Manufacturing and Robotics: Robotics Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing Systems, Industrial Automation, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, Data Analytics, Big Data Management, Predictive Modelling.
- Agricultural Sciences: Agronomy, Agricultural Biotechnology, Food Security.
- Business and financial services: Financial Engineering, Risk Management, International Business.
- Education and Training: Educational Leadership, Curriculum Development, Special Education, STEM Education, Educational Technology.
- Engineering: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering.
- Engineering and Technology: Aerospace Engineering, Nanotechnology, Telecommunications Engineering.
- Environmental Science: Environmental Engineering, Conservation Science, Climate Change Analysis, Sustainable Development.
- Environmental and Sustainability Studies: Environmental Management, Sustainable Development, Renewable Energy Systems.
- Finance and Accounting: Chartered Accountancy, Financial Analysis, Actuarial Science, Risk Management, Investment Banking.
- Healthcare and Biomedical Sciences: Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Research, Health Informatics, Medical Specialisation (e.g. Oncology, Cardiology), Nursing, Pharmacology, Public Health.
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT): Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, Software Development, Network Engineering, IT Project Management.
- Public Policy and Administration: Public Health Policy, Urban Planning, International Development.
The scholarship aims to address the critical shortage of skilled professionals in the country, by funding postgraduate qualifications that are necessary for economic growth and global competitiveness.

ABOUT THE MIKE BROWN SCHOLARSHIP – EXPENSES COVERED, BENEFITS & SELECTION
The scholarship will provide cover for the following expenses: tuition fees, learning materials, equipment (such as laptops), accommodation, meals and a fixed stipend for daily living expenses.
Additionally, scholars will also receive the following benefits:
- Opportunities for international study, with travel and accommodation costs covered.
- Psychosocial support and mentorship from top leaders to enhance guidance, inspiration and professional networking opportunities, expanding leadership skills and career prospects.
Shortlisted applicants will undergo psychometric and other assessments and attend a virtual interview.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MIKE BROWN SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must have completed a Bachelor’s Degree with a strong academic record – a minimum overall average of 65% and a minimum of 60% for each course
- You must have obtained admission to study towards a postgraduate qualification (Honours or Master’s), preferably in a scarce and critical skill area
- You must have obtained admission to study at a public university or university of technology in South African
- You must have strong leadership potential, show innovation, and be committed to making a positive impact in your chosen field
- You must be committed to South Africa’s economic growth and social development, especially in underserved areas
- Preference will be given to individuals of African, Indian, and Coloured descent to promote diversity and inclusion

Submit the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
- ID document (certified copy)
- Most recent academic transcript, including 2024 results and 2025 mid-year results if applicable
- Parents or guardians ID documents (certified copies)
- Parents or guardians proof of household income (letters of employment or latest payslips if employed: certified copy, not older than 3 months / IRP5, IT3 and IT12 forms for the past 2 years if only earning commission / affidavit if unemployed / pension slip or bank statement for other income forms (pension, grant, maintenance, rent, or interest from investments etc: not older than 3 months)
- Parents or guardians home loan account statement and city or town council rates and taxes statement (not older than 3 months)
- Parents, guardians and applicants latest 3 months’ bank statements
- Financial checks affidavit (download here)
Applications must be submitted at the bursary office of your university.
