ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – LRF
The Livestock Registering Federation (LRF) is a non-profit organization that was established in 2000. Its principal business and purpose is to unite, protect, and promote its members (who act as Registering Authorities) into an affiliated federation. This federation operates under high standards of performance and conduct, promoting the interests and ideas of all its members.
For more than 20 years, Dr. Bradfield worked as a genetics consultant, playing a vital role in the creation and ongoing management of BREEDPLAN (a genetic evaluation system) and HerdMASTER (an on-farm software) within the country. Dr Bradfield was a hard-working and dedicated leader, passionate about helping those less fortunate.
ABOUT THE LRF BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
LRF is inviting students to apply for the Dr Michael Bradfield Bursary, for the 2024/2025 academic year. The bursary aims to provide support for Postgraduate studies within Animal Breeding and Genetics.
The bursary award was created to commemorate Dr. Michael Bradfield who was a dedicated genetics consultant. The bursary award hopes to channel inclusivity and aid underprivileged students – a cause that was of importance to the late Dr. Bradfield.

MORE ABOUT THE LRF BURSARY PROGRAMME – PAYMENT & SELECTION
The Bursary amount shall be determined by LRF and will be paid to the successful candidate in two or three installments. These installments will be paid once a year and directly to the candidate.
Should the candidate fail to complete their studies, LRF reserves the right to claim the total amount of the award plus ten (10) percent interest.
Should the candidate engage in any dissertation or publication that is benefited by the bursary award, the candidate then has the responsibility to mention and recognize the bursary award
Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE LRF BURSARY
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must have completed a BSc Agric in Animal Science qualification
- You must have obtained your qualification from a SACNSP registered South African university
- You must be pursuing postgraduate studies within Animal Genetics and Breeding
- You must have a minimum GPA of 65%
- You must have obtained a minimum result of 70% for Animal Breeding and Genetics modules, on a third and final year level
- You must demonstrate strong academic ability
- You must intend to complete and graduate within two to three years
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE LRF BURSARY
Students can apply by downloading the LRF Bursary Nomination Form 2024 (.pdf), which must then be completed by your head of department.
Enter “www.zabursaries.co.za” in the field asking how you heard about the LRF bursary.
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
- Graduation certificate of degrees you have completed (certified copy)
- Official statement/ transcript of all modules you have completed at an undergraduate level (certified copy)
- Updated Curriculum Vitae stating your relevant courses and any awards you may have received
- Brief project proposal of your intended study in Animal Breeding and Genetics
