ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – NMU & AIDC
The Nelson Mandela University (NMU), formerly known as the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), opened in January 2005, as the result of a merger between the PE Technikon the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE) and the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University (Vista PE).
NMU is a comprehensive university that offers professional and vocational training across its 7 campuses, of which 6 are in Port Elizabeth and 1 in George. NMU allows student to pursue studies in a range of fields, from diploma or a degree level, up to doctoral level qualifications.
The Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC) is a subsidiary of the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA), an agency of the Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED).
ABOUT THE NMU/ AIDC BURSARY – FIELDS COVERED
The Department of Mechatronics, together with the Advanced Mechatronics Technology Centre at Nelson Mandela University, in partnership with the Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC) is inviting students to apply for their bursary programme, for the 2023 academic year.
Bursaries will be awarded for Masters and Doctoral studies, within the area of Automotive Engineering and Manufacturing.
Automotive engineering and car manufacturing are one of the strategic growth areas within the Eastern Cape province, identified by the South African Government. The sector is in shortage of highly skilled experts in solving current problems encountered during the production of vehicles and manufacturing of their components. Postgraduate bursary recipients will be required to identify the scope of industry-related problems and work closely with the key industry partners of the automotive sector in the Eastern Cape.

ABOUT THE NMU/ AIDC BURSARY – SELECTION & DUTIES

Doctoral candidates will be required to perform the following duties:
- Investigate novel methods for automotive engineering and manufacturing.
- Investigate engineering solutions through designing and prototyping smaller models, which can be used to imitate complex manufacturing systems to solve real-life industry-related problems.
- Present findings at various national and international forums.
- Publish scientific and research articles in accredited national and international journals.
- Participate in academic activities related to engineering modules.
Masters’ candidates will be required to perform the following duties:
- Solve complex automotive engineering and manufacturing problems encountered in the industry.
- Work with engineers and technicians from the industry to implement engineering solutions for the various industrial problems.
- Present findings to various national and international forums.
- Participate in writing scientific and research articles for accredited national and international journals.
- Participate in academic activities related to engineering modules.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NMU/ AIDC BURSARY
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
Doctoral bursary applicants:
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must have completed a Masters’s degree (MSC, MEng or MTech) in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering
- You must intend on studying towards a Doctoral qualification in Automotive Engineering and Manufacturing, at Nelson Mandela University
- You must have knowledge in programming, modelling, statistics, and design of experiments
- You must have proficient writing and presentation skills
- Students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds are encouraged to apply
Masters bursary applicants:
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must have completed a BEng/ BTech (Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering)
- You must intend on studying towards a Masters qualification in Automotive Engineering and Manufacturing, at Nelson Mandela University
- You must have experiences in the design of electromechanical engineering, mechanical and electronics systems
- You must have knowledge in programming, modelling, statistics, and design of experiments
- You must have proficient writing and presentation skills
- Students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds are encouraged to apply
