ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – OPEN WINDOW
Open Window, established in 1993, is an accredited Higher Education Institution located in the province of Gauteng, in South Africa. The institution offers 3 bachelor’s degree programs, a postgraduate degree programme, as well as many accredited certificates related to the Creative Arts.
The vision of Open Window is to be one of the leading educational institutions and they aim to do this by promoting excellence in academia, being relevant in the creative industries, and using the latest technologies.
Open Window’s goal is to create students who are critical thinkers, dynamic, professional, and have many capabilities that are required in the creative industry. Open Window does this by providing relevant education opportunities through the use of the latest technologies, educational models that are superior, a high standard of excellence, international competitive outcomes, and industry requirements.
ABOUT THE OPEN WINDOW SCHOLARSHIP – FIELDS COVERED
The Open Window is inviting students to apply for their Scholarship Competition, for the 2024 academic year. Creatives are invited to apply for this competition in Visual Storytelling.
4 scholarships will be awarded for full-time degree studies at Open Window (in Irene, Pretoria) – 1 for each of these specialisation streams:
- Animation Arts
- Film Arts
- Creative Technologies
- Visual Communication

MORE ABOUT THE OPEN WINDOW SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION
Scholarships will cover up to 50% of the course fees per year (for the full three-year degree).
The competition is based on Visual Storytelling – a skill that all four schools at The Open Window emphasise. To enter the competition, candidates are required to demonstrate their visual storytelling skills by responding to the theme: “What’s in a story?”
Open Window wants applicants to create a series of 4 images or frames inspired by the theme. Applicants are free to use any format, any approach, or any visual medium – as long as you can submit a story of your own in response to ‘What’s in a story?’ For example, think of stop motion, comics, photographs, typography, sound, animation, 3D objects, digital designs/ illustrations, textiles, ceramics, film, etc.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE OPEN WINDOW SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must be interested in studying towards one of the full-time degree qualifications listed above, at Open Window
- You must be able to start studying in January of 2024
- You must meet the entry requirements for the degree at Open Window (read the criteria here: Animation Arts, Film Arts, Creative Technologies, Visual Communication)
- You must demonstrate exceptional artistic talent and creative potential
- You must be committed to completing 120 credits per year
- You must achieve and maintain a minimum overall average of 65% across all subjects, to maintain the scholarship package
- You must read and agree to the competition rules (available below, under the application section)
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE OPEN WINDOW SCHOLARSHIP

Before applying, candidates must download and read the following important documents: Open Window Scholarship Competition Brief and the Open Window Scholarship Competition Rules (.pdf)
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application may be disqualified):
- Main Project (a series of 4 images or frames inspired by the theme)
- Project title (relevant to the theme)
- Rationale (indicating how the project responds to the theme “What’s in a story?”) (maximum 200 words)
- Project planning document (include your planning and revision process notes, which may include thumbnail sketches, layout considerations, behind-the-scenes images/videos, venue scouting images, or anything else that documents the planning and revision process)
NOTES ABOUT THE OPEN WINDOW SCHOLARSHIP
- All admission will be subject to the company’s standard admission requirements.
- The scholarship will only be offered to applicants who meet the Degree entry requirements.
- Time-based entries (such as stop motion, sound, animation, etc.) should not exceed 30 seconds.
- Film and animation submissions do not require 5 scene changes, but rather 5 moments/ events that are linked by cause and effect.
- Please ensure that the file size of your application is not bigger than 20 MB.
- Should your video exceed 20 MB, please upload your work to YouTube and provide the link in your application.
- All work will be judged individually based on several criteria.
- The successful candidate will be awarded based on creative potential and artistic talent.
SELECTION FOR THE OPEN WINDOW SCHOLARSHIP
- Before registration, a Student Advisor will complete a financial consultation with prospective students, to ensure they are able to complete their academic journey.
- Shortlisted candidates will be announced by mid-January 2024, on the Open Window website.
- Shortlisted candidates will be required to conduct an online interview with Open Window, via Skype/Google Meet/Zoom.
- Winners will be announced in December 2023, on the Open Window website.
